Autopsy results are pending on anewborn who died Friday after her mother fell asleep while breastfeeding her.
An autopsy was conducted Saturday, and the baby’s body released to her family, said Robert Gerds, administrator for the Oakland County Medical Examiner. He said it could be several days before the autopsy findings are released.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday that the mother gave birth in her Independence Township, Mich., home about 2:30 a.m. Friday with the help of a midwife, and was nursing the baby about 5:50 a.m.
The mother fell asleep with the baby in her arms and when she woke up, the baby was not breathing. The parents called 911, and the newborn was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead by a doctor. The police said Tuesday that they were investigating the death.
The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the child or her parents.
